WIKI

Hello again!

The topic that we will consider today, the WIKI - what it is, why and what for. Probably every person has used WIKI for his own purposes: study, reading, knowledge of something new. Let's know something new about it.

Wiki is a web technology used for collaborative publishing on the web. Wiki is a type of server software that allows you to work with data on a remote server on the Web. Users interact with the software through a web interface that lets them read, edit and publish content.

It has its own advantages, because it is:

  • heavily based on collaboration
  • non-linear and not based on time (unlike blogs)
  • purely content-oriented
Genres of wiki sites include
Encyclopedias  serving as information resource, this site attracts hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world to contribute, and hundreds of millions to read.

Corporate wikis are knowledge bases that collect corporate rules and practices, workflows, regulations and case studies that accumulate in a company over the years of operation. Corporate wikis are used to train new employees and harness the power of corporate synergy. Due to their commercial nature, corporate wikis are only available to company employees, thereby cannot be demonstrated in this article.
Fan wikis are websites dedicated to a specific field that excites a group of people.
How can we use wiki in education?
In a wiki site, students are free to create pages about themselves. A teacher can ask students to create such pages as an entry-level task to get them familiar with wiki and its tools. A student's page can contain a photo, bio information, hobbies, a list of interests, links to favorite websites. A task to create such a page gives the student an incentive how to use formatting, publishing and multimedia capabilities of a wiki platform, thereby preparing the student for more complex tasks.
